Viticultural Innovation: From Vinification to Distribution

While Paris has become the capital of wine with the Wine Paris exhibition held from February 11 to 13, France stands as the global capital of innovation for the viticultural sector.

We aimed to conduct this study to highlight the dynamism of France's viticultural sector. Too often, we hear that the wine market is stagnant, that it has not experienced (or perhaps cannot experience?) its digital revolution... in short, that innovation has no place in this traditional sector.

Within the framework of the Wine Paris exhibition, which aims to establish Paris as the global capital of wine, it seemed important to us to demonstrate that France has a major innovative role to play for the viticultural sector.

This infographic demonstrates that numerous stakeholders have driven innovation by creating cutting-edge technological tools to assist winemakers in their work, both in the vineyards, in the cellars, and for the distribution of their products.

As part of this study, we identified nearly 30 companies that have made providing services to winemakers their primary activity, categorized into 5 main groups:

  • Raw Material Suppliers
  • Vineyard and Cellar Support Tools (vineyard monitoring, viticulturist decision-making assistance, and vineyard and winemaking equipment maintenance),
  • Estate Management and Marketing Support Tools
  • Direct-to-Consumer Distribution Players
  • Estate Marketing Support Tools

The criteria for inclusion in this study are: being a French company less than 5 years old, with a service or innovation specifically targeting winemakers.

Platforms enabling winemakers to procure raw materials online.

These platforms, such as Agriconomie and Meshectares.com, enable winemakers to procure both raw materials (e.g., phytosanitary products) and agricultural equipment (e.g., tractors, machinery). They offer an extremely broad selection by aggregating the offerings of most suppliers in their respective markets.

Grouper Vitiagri leverages a collective approach, offering a group purchasing service for farmers and winemakers aimed at cost optimization. Comparateur Agricole also aligns with this strategy by facilitating the purchase and resale of raw materials.

These raw material suppliers primarily aim to streamline and simplify the procurement process, supported by a product and tool rating system designed to reassure winemakers.

Technological tools for winemaking and cellar maintenance.

Current innovations in winemaking and vineyard monitoring leverage modern technologies, such as data collection, to guide winemakers' decisions. The development of these innovations addresses a fundamental trend within wine estates: the eco-responsibility of wine producers, evidenced by a significant increase in vineyards undergoing conversion. This pronounced trend is leading viticulturists to radically alter their work methods and technical approaches.

Tools dedicated to vineyard monitoring.

Producing quality wine necessitates healthy vines. Among innovative players, some have implemented systems for analyzing the health status of vines and tanks, while others offer data collection tools on vine conditions, enabling winemakers to intervene at crucial moments.

Regarding vine health status, Chouette and Scanopy have implemented measurement and monitoring tools to analyze vine conditions and regulate viticulturist interventions.

Tools dedicated to vineyard maintenance and winemaking equipment.

Weeding robots are what Naio Technologie and Vitibot have created. The innovation lies in addressing the unique terrain of vineyards, where traditional agricultural machinery cannot be used. Therefore, these two companies have designed robots capable of navigating between vine stocks to remove weeds and maintain vine health.

Following this same logic, DiiMotion has developed an ecological vine spraying solution, and UV Boosting offers a plant stimulation service by controlling UV exposure. In the cellar, R-tech Oenologie has implemented connected tanks and barrels to assist with winemaking and aging, particularly by monitoring equipment hygiene.

Decision-support tools for viticulturists.

Big Data has arrived to serve the vineyard! Some companies have deployed connected sensors to collect external data, particularly for meteorological tools such as Meteus (an Isagri Group startup), Weenat, Sencrop, and WeatherMeasures.

These innovations, supporting precision agriculture, enable winemakers to adapt to adverse weather conditions and adjust interventions accordingly. Similarly, Carbon Bee opts for data collection via cameras and aerial drones.

Tools and software for the management, development, and commercialization of wine estates.

To minimize time spent on administrative management of the estate, numerous companies have implemented administrative software for accounting, management, and inventory tracking, thereby simplifying estate operations on a broader scale.

Tools for the administrative and commercial management of the estate.

Bewease, Vinosoft, and PrimusSoft have combined their expertise to support integrated estate management and sales management. These companies enable users to consolidate bottle inventory, accounting tracking, and sales management into a single tool. In the same spirit of simplifying sales, Vinovae streamlines wine tastings through a system that samples 75cl bottles into 2cl portions without compromising the wine’s quality. The startup La vie du Vin has implemented a system for tracking vintages, allowing winemakers to monitor the journey of their bottles from the cellar to the retailer (wine shops, hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores) or to the table of the individual consumer. WineServices optimizes the distribution of fine wines by providing a precise overview of where they are distributed worldwide.

Platforms dedicated to financing the wine sector are also available, such as WineFunding, FundoVino, and Miimosa. For the latter, the objective is to support local producers through two forms: MiiMOSA (reward-based crowdfunding up to €70,000 and participatory loans up to €200,000) or MiiMOSA Transition (for agricultural, food, and energy transition projects), offering participatory loans or bonds up to €1,000,000.

Tools for the commercial development of the estate.

The 1st Oenotourism Conference, held in Paris in November 2018, contributed to enhancing this rapidly developing sector. The associated objective is to promote French wine regions and market them at European and international levels, as highlighted last November by Hervé Novelli.

Numerous players have ventured into oenotourism in recent years, enabling winemakers to easily offer on-site oenotourism activities through online platforms.

After launching a direct-to-estate distribution service for both professionals and private individuals, Les Grappes, through the acquisition of Vinizos, launched its oenotourism platform last November. Rue des Vignerons and Oenotourisme.com align with this same trend, offering direct estate bookings for cellar tours and tastings via their web platforms.

Winery Direct Distribution Platforms

Current innovations in the viticulture sector also encompass the development of marketplaces designed to support winemakers in the direct distribution of their products. Consistent with the scope of our study, we have opted to feature only those platforms that prioritize direct-to-winemaker sales and short supply chains.

Since 2014, Les Grappes and Twil (The Wine I Love) have facilitated connections between winegrowers and, respectively, both professionals and private individuals, and exclusively private individuals. Actiwine further enriches this landscape by concentrating solely on the professional market segment.

This comprehensive review of innovation trends benefiting winemakers underscores a robust dynamism within the viticulture sector. These various enterprises have generated numerous employment opportunities (at least 400), aligning with a significant underlying trend: innovation acts as a catalyst for opportunities for all stakeholders in the wine industry. Agricultural sector professionals have clearly grasped this, consistently featuring Agritech prominently at every professional event. Is this a precedent to follow?
