What to Drink with a Sweet Crêpe? - Food & Wine Pairings
Pancakes and Candlemas—a time-honored tradition!
We could eat crêpes all year round! By the beach, in winter by the fireplace… They’re so delicious that they’re perfect for any season, but the time of year when we eat them the most is Candlemas! But where does this tradition come from?
But what wine should you choose to pair with this delicacy?
To complement the sweetness of the crêpes, it’s best to pair them with a light, fresh wine that’s well-balanced. Opt for sweet or semi-dry wines for a truly indulgent experience, but avoid sweet wines, which will be far too sugary!
Loire Valley wines are perfect for their elegance and fruitiness. Try a Vouvray—it’s the ideal appellation for sweet, festive pairings. For something unique and truly indulgent, Loire Valley rosés are highly regarded, as are Anjou rosés. For those who love bubbles, you might prefer Champagne—as long as it’s brut!
The famous chocolate-banana crepe: a delicious treat
A classic treat for late winter afternoons, the kind that makes foodies’ mouths water and remains a favorite among adults… I’m talking about the chocolate-banana crêpe! Sometimes topped with slivered almonds for a crunchy touch, this crêpe warms you up, fills you up, and delights your taste buds. Beyond being a hit for afternoon tea, it’s a blend of complex flavors—ripe fruit, dried fruit, cocoa beans… The aromas are bold and pair beautifully together, so you’ll need to be careful when, for adult afternoon tea, you’re looking for a wine to pair with it! You’ll want to choose from full-bodied, aromatic wines that aren’t too sweet, so as not to overwhelm the crêpe’s natural sweetness. Good news: these wines come in red, dry white, and sweet varieties. Opt for Banyuls or Maury du Roussillon reds; Pinot Noirfrom Alsace is the right choice for white. Finally, sweet but not overly sweet wines like Muscat de Rivesaltes or Rasteau will work well.
