Alsace Charles Frey
The Estate's Story: In 1997, after several years of research and convinced by the inherent quality of the wines, Dominique converted the entire estate to organic and biodynamic viticulture, becoming one of the pioneers in Alsace. Organic viticulture hadn't yet achieved the success it enjoys today, which made Charles skeptical of its practices, perhaps fearing the collapse of so many years of sacrifice. The beginnings of organic farming were difficult; the judgment of others even led Charles to gather nettles at night, unseen, to make herbal teas for the following morning. Charles may not yet have been convinced that organic viticulture would work, but it was important to respect his son's convictions and let time prove him right. The pride of the estate. Originally from Switzerland, our family settled in Dambach-la-Ville at the beginning of the 18th century with the ambition of cultivating vines. The first bottles were produced in 1963. Time and many bottles have passed, and Dominique, Charles' son, converted the entire estate to organic and biodynamic farming in 1996. Today, with the third generation (Julien and Thiébaud, the eldest and youngest members of the family respectively), we continue to evolve while maintaining the same philosophy. The estate's wines are now aged in a bioclimatic, above-ground cellar. Natural, warm, and functional, it further conveys our vision of wine and viticulture. The majority of the terroirs we cultivate are composed of granite. Our philosophy is to have a living and balanced soil by respecting the rhythms of nature. This energy deployed upstream offers us pure, vibrant wines with a minerality accentuated by the granite.
