Everything You Need to Know About Buzet

Agen isn’t just about prunes! In this wine-growing region, the Buzet appellation stands out: it blends grape varieties from its neighbor, Bordeaux, into its terroir but benefits from different climatic conditions, such as abundant sunshine and very hot, drier summers. The vines produce red, white, and rosé wines that reach perfect ripeness by harvest time. Its vineyards span over 1,800 hectares. The red wines are made from the following grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc are the main varieties for the white wines. The soils consist of clay, gravel, or limestone. The reds are quite dark, sometimes with a hint of purple when young but darkening with age. They can be aged for 5 to 15 years. The rosés take on grayish hues, and the whites have emerald highlights. Red wines offer aromas of red or black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), sometimes candied (prune), on the nose, and depending on the aging method, vanilla notes may emerge. As they age, they may also develop animal notes. The freshness of the whites comes from the Sauvignon, with aromatic notes of flowers and toasted almonds—perfect as an aperitif! The acidity of the rosés complements their red fruit aromas. On the palate, the wine is crisp, and when young, it leaves a tannic impression. It pairs well with red meat as well as game.
