Château de Rougeon
Anecdotes from the Estate: When Dominique took over the estate, the vines hadn't been pruned for over two years, the barns no longer had doors, and brambles were trying to get in through the windows. He and his wife had to clear the land and replant. Today, the estate covers more than 10 hectares and cultivates four grape varieties: Aligoté, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay. A Brief History of the Estate: In 1839, Claude Ozanon acquired Château de Rougeon. His son, Charles Ozanon, was a world-renowned botanist. He planted, experimented with, and cultivated American grape varieties after the phylloxera epidemic devastated some of the estate's vines. Charles's son, Henri, the creator of the Appellations d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system, settled at the Château. Subsequently, his grandson Joseph Bouchard, co-director of the family winery Bouchard Père & Fils, took over the management of the estate. Since 1980, Dominique Bouchard has been at the helm. From that point on, he has continuously contributed to the estate's development. Between modernizing equipment, planting new vines, and implementing rigorous environmental practices, the estate has experienced a true renaissance. Today, the different grape varieties can fully reflect the diversity of the terroirs, from coarse sand on granite rocks to clay-limestone marl. The wines are therefore the best way to discover the terroir, the grape varieties of Burgundy, and the personality of the winemaker! The pride of the estate: Château de Rougeon is a family estate, now in its second century, with six generations of history, located on the Côte Chalonnaise in the commune of Bissey-sous-Cruchaud, one of the oldest wine-growing villages in Burgundy. The Château de Rougeon estate has existed for over 200 years. The vines that encircle the château, on the hilltops, benefit from optimal exposure, terroir, and climate. This ideal combination allows the grape varieties to fully express their identities.
