Anecdotes from the Estate: The cultivation practices reflect a commitment to producing quality wines. The desire to obtain healthy and flavorful grapes is therefore central to the estate's philosophy. Consequently, the principles of organic farming are applied: organic fertilization according to the soil's needs, treatments using environmentally friendly products, and the establishment of natural ground cover to preserve the soil, as well as the preservation of surrounding woods and hedgerows. The estate has been certified organic by Ecocert since 2014. This working philosophy serves as a transition towards a more biodynamic approach. The vines are pruned using the cordon de Royat method to maintain production between 30 and 40 hl/ha, depending on the plot and the desired wine. The vines are trained on multiple wires to ensure abundant leaf surface area, guaranteeing optimal photosynthesis. Several maturity checks of the various plots precede the harvest, and the grapes are sorted on a sorting table before entering the cellar. A brief history of the estate: Although the 1582 land registry reveals that vines already existed in the "Coste Chaude district," the estate as it exists today was established in the 1960s. It was then taken over by Mr. and Mrs. Fues in 1994, who made numerous improvements, notably to the grape varieties planted with several plots of Viognier, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc, as well as to the vineyard management, the grape reception area, and the winery and wine storage facilities. They also obtained organic certification for the estate from Ecocert in 2014. It was then acquired in April 2018 by Vincent Tramier, a former notary from a family with a long history of winemaking. The pride of the estate. The estate is located atop a hill east of Visan at an altitude of 370 meters. Covering a total area of 37 hectares, the vineyard lies amidst oak forests. Grenache, the king of grapes in the Rhône Valley, dominates our vineyard, followed by Syrah and a small plot of old Carignan and Mourvèdre vines. In 2012, a vineyard planted with Viognier, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc further enriched the grape varieties. It is above all the terroir that makes Domaine Coste Chaude so special. This unique situation is conferred by the region's turbulent geological history. Indeed, 6 million years ago, when the Mediterranean Sea was completely dry, powerful rivers tore the rocks from the Alps that today form the conglomerate of the Visan plateau. Composed of gravel and clay from very ancient alluvial deposits, the soil is largely covered with rounded pebbles. The climate is influenced by the bounty of the Mediterranean and by the Mistral, a cool, dry south wind, beneficial to vine cultivation as it guarantees the production of healthy and balanced grapes.
