Domaine de l'Hortus

Languedoc | France

Jean Orliac is the founder of Domaine de l'Hortus, an iconic Languedoc vineyard planted on the steep slopes between Pic Saint-Loup and Mont Hortus, in the Montpellier hinterland. An agronomist by training, he chose in the 1970s to revive fallow land to cultivate vines, convinced of the exceptional potential of this terroir, long neglected.

Alongside his wife Marie-Thérèse, he gradually developed the estate by replanting and carefully working the plots, before vinifying his first wines around 1990. Today, the Orliac family continues this family adventure with their children who manage the vineyard, marketing and winemaking, while developing elegant red and white wines that embody the identity of Pic Saint-Loup and Val de Montferrand.

The estate's wines reflect the geological diversity of the terroir, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache and other grape varieties carefully cultivated to express their own character, while also showcasing the garrigue and the region's temperate Mediterranean climate.
