Domaine Laureau

L'Aurore 2017

Savennières | Blanc | 2017

This cuvée was born on a very sad morning, April 26, 2017, as frost wreaked havoc on the vineyards of the Damien and Florence Laureau estate. It is this bleak, cold landscape that the Angers-based painter Frédéric Eymeri has depicted in a very understated manner on the label of this rare (2,400 bottles) and unique bottle. This wine was indeed produced from the estate’s Chenin vines planted on soils of wind-blown sand and sandstone schist—what remained of those frost-damaged plots—blended into a single cuvée. It is therefore the only 2017 wine you will be able to find from Domaine Laureau.

The vines were tended with the utmost care, using organic methods and the expertise of the Laureau estate. After being hand-harvested, this wine was aged on its lees and in oak barrels for 12 months before spending another 9 months in tanks.

Our Review of the Cuvée

The wine from Domaine Laureau offers a surprisingly intense bouquet, blending spicy notes with a lemony freshness. On the palate, it reveals a full-bodied richness from the very first sip, lingering into a lively, clean finish that invites you to savor it again and again. The harmony between its full-bodied texture and its liveliness makes it a perfect companion for fine aperitifs or delicate dishes such as celeriac en papillote with sea bass tartare, or pan-seared scallops. A gastronomic experience that promises to improve with age.

In Savennières, Laureau approaches Chenin with a broad yet refined interpretation. The white wines acquire a silky texture, underpinned by a mineral tension characteristic of schist. Long aging periods, often on lees, contribute volume without obscuring aromatic precision. These are profound yet disciplined wines, reflecting the strict identity of the terroir.
