Pinot Gris Bollenberg 2019

Alsace | Blanc | 2019

Made from old vines planted in the 1950s on the limestone terroir of Bollenberg, this Pinot Gris is vinified according to biodynamic principles. It undergoes natural fermentation and extended aging on fine lees for one to one and a half years, without filtration or the addition of any additives. The wine reveals a pure expression of the grape variety, with a briny quality, a delicate texture, and a crystalline finish.

Our Review of the Cuvée

The color displays subtle golden highlights. The nose opens with aromas of white peach, acacia, lime zest, and green apple, followed by spicy notes and a subtle salinity. On the palate, the acidity is lively, supported by a pronounced saline freshness. The texture is taut, with a lively and racy profile, and a long finish where lemon and minerality linger elegantly. A sweet Pinot Gris of remarkable purity.

In Haut-Rhin, Domaine Valentin Zusslin has practiced biodynamic viticulture for many years, particularly on the hillsides of Bollenberg and around Orschwihr. These areas, characterized by varied soils and a dry, windy climate, provide a favorable environment for precise and balanced expressions of Alsatian grape varieties.

Rieslings, Gewürztraminers, and Pinot Noirs are meticulously crafted with constant attention to ripeness and the preservation of freshness. The wines are distinguished by pure fruit, a clean structure, and sustained energy on the palate. Aging processes are carefully managed, imparting depth and persistence without weighing down the profiles or masking the grapes' origin.

The entire range of cuvées exhibits significant stylistic coherence, driven by a strong sense of place. The estate offers a rigorous and transparent interpretation of its terroirs, where tension and precision are constant hallmarks.
