The gigognan castle is located in the commune of Sorgues. The 40 ha of the estate are located south of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation near the Rhône, which brings a natural and incomparable freshness during the hot summer months. Our wines are mainly composed of Grenache, Syrah and Mourverdre grapes for the Rouges. For the Whites, these are old vines of Clairette, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. Our vines, all planted in Gobelet vines, are harvested by hand and some of them are complantation vines harvested several times to obtain the optimum maturity of the different grape varieties. Our soils are composed of silica and clay under an important mattress of Rhône rolled pebbles. The precision brought to the maceration and ageing of our wines, with the help of our recent cellar composed of temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats, are then matured in casks or barrels, which allows us to extract all the complexity of our terroir.
Château Gigognan was built on the foundations of a Roman temple that was a priory in the 16th century, when we found the first archives of the vineyard. After having passed through the hands of several owners, it was recently acquired by the Hénin family who undertook major renovation work, the construction of a new winery, the reconstruction of the vineyard which will be completely organic from the 2018 harvest. This process is supported by the advice of the famous consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt.
Jean-François Hénin wished to call upon Stéphane Derenoncourt's advice for his authentic and faithful approach to the exceptional terroir of Châteauneuf du Pape for both Reds and Whites. Our 40 ha of Côtes du Rhône offer wines that also evoke great sensations of terroir and freshness, I recommend in particular this special Cuvée from a small plot "le bois des Moines" or Mouverdre and Grenache express all the strength and elegance of this terroir.
