But who is hiding behind the imposing Jean-Christophe Bott and this Alsatian accent? A man who is passionate about his vines and his wines, who never tires of talking about and letting you taste his wines, and for whom respect for the terroir comes before medals. Jean-Christophe works with small yields, he also converted the estate to organic farming in 2000 and to biodynamic farming in 2002.
Domaine Bott-Geyl, located in Beblenheim, Alsace, comprises 15 hectares of vines spread over 7 different communes. With a strong family heritage, Jean-Christophe Bott produces wines with Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru and Crémant d'Alsace appellations.
Each of his cuvées is crafted to strike the perfect balance between power and length on the palate. And it's a successful challenge!
Heir to a family tradition dating back to 1795, where the love of the vine has been passed down from generation to generation, Jean-Christophe Bott has been running Domaine Bott-Geyl since 1993.
He was only 24 when he took over the estate, but he has a wealth of knowledge thanks to his winegrowing experience acquired with winemakers in France, Germany, Australia and South Africa. An ardent defender of terroirs, he works with small volumes and manages his vinification naturally and progressively. His work was rewarded by the Gault & Millau wine guide in 1996, when he was named best winegrower of the year!
"It may seem obvious to some, but many winegrowers overlook the fact that "everything happens in the vineyard". Only high quality grapes make it possible to dream of a great wine. I am an ardent defender of terroirs, and the whole philosophy of Domaine Bott-Geyl lies in the desire to achieve the highest degree of expression from these same terroirs."
The estate, which has been organically farmed since 2000 and biodynamically since 2002, has 6 Grands-crus, 4 Lieux-dits and 1 Clos historique. Constantly striving for authenticity and excellence, Jean-Christophe makes wines that live up to the notion of "Grand vin d'Alsace".
"Being a winegrower is the art of bringing together tradition and modernity, the perpetuation of the vineyard and ecological concerns. It is this spirit that drives me and my wines.
My favorite? Certainly the Riesling Grand Cru Schoenenbourg! We strive to sublimate the natural qualities and particularities of each of our terroirs, and to conduct our winemaking so that these specificities are reflected in the wines we make. This search for authenticity does not follow any fashion effect, it is part of my philosophy."
