What to drink with Gravlax salmon?
You may have heard of a new way to enjoy salmon that’s all the rage in Scandinavia: gravlax. It’s salmon seasoned and marinated in dill. It’s a nice change from traditional smoked salmon! And it’s a nice change from the usual white wine you’d pair with smoked salmon!
Gravlax is a super-simple recipe: fresh salmon, salt, sugar, and dill… and a little patience before digging in! Always with a touch of creativity, we’re sharing an upgraded gravlax recipe with “What’s in My Fridge.” Another trick up your sleeve to impress the in-laws!
What wine goes well with gravlax?
Does this new way of preparing salmon mean we need to rethink our wine and salmon pairings? Actually, yes, a little! We’ll opt for mineral-driven wines to balance out the richness of the salmon and the marinade. Avoid wines that are too rich or too oaky, even though they might be tempting with this type of dish.
Our recommendations for pairing wine with gravlax:
- "Classic" white wines —such as Muscadet Sèvre-sur-Maine, Sancerre, and Alsace Riesling —will perfectly complement your gravlax with their citrus notes and minerality
- "The originals" among rosé wines: Languedoc, Roussillon, Côtes-de-Provence, or Côtes-du-Rhône—such as the well-known Tavel. These wines have floral notes reminiscent of dill.
- "The Prestigious" Champagnes: a white-of-whites champagne with fine bubbles, perfect for special occasions or to finish off a bottle started as an aperitif.
