Summer has arrived at Château de la Selve!

Here is the latest news from the estate after a spring which, as usual, kept them very busy in the vineyard!

It was with great relief that they arrived in July with a harvest that looked as good as possible, having been unaffected by either frost or hail.

Florence and Benoît Chazallon are confidently and enthusiastically moving towards a promising 2023 vintage.

Hoping that the sun and heat will be there soon; luckily, there has been some nice rain so far which gives a bright green to an Ardèche that is usually duller at this time of year.

New plots planted!

Taking advantage of the mid-spring humidity and coolness, they planted new grape varieties, historically present in the terroirs of southern Ardèche. You can now find them in the Petite Selve white wine!

This is Grenache gris , but Clairette rose has also been planted .

This first grape variety is known for its resistance to wind and drought, while producing very juicy, thick-skinned grapes. Clairette Rose, on the other hand, is prized as a table grape because of its flavorful and aromatic taste. It is also a very drought-resistant variety.

After winter pruning, and having formed and tied the new arms of the vines, return to the vineyard for shoot thinning (removing the superfluous stems which will give more aerated vines and a more balanced harvest, they leave two per head, which makes 5 to 6 heads per vine!).

Then they raised them, that is to say they passed them between the wires in order to have good ventilation and good penetration of the sun.
