Douro Drink me 2021

Douro | Rouge | 2021

This Douro wine combines elegance and approachability, offering a complex profile while remaining pleasant on the palate. The vines, ranging from 10 to 40 years old, benefit from schist soil and varied elevations, which facilitate a manual harvest in September. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 14 months of aging in a combination of French oak barrels and old-wood casks to achieve a balanced structure.

Our Review of the Cuvée

At first glance, this wine displays a dark, translucent garnet color. Its nose captivates with rich aromas of blackberry coulis, incense, and licorice. On the palate, it reveals a round, full-bodied texture, where flavors of candied black cherry and chocolate intertwine. Menthol notes bring a vibrant freshness, while the long, savory finish is marked by sweet spices and stewed black fruits. Hints of leather and pepper enrich the overall profile, prolonging the pleasure of the tasting.

Niepoort

Douro | Portugal

Niepoort is a renowned Portuguese winery founded in 1842 by Fransiscus Marius van der Niepoort in Porto, in the heart of the Douro region, and has been family-run for five generations. It is known for its historic Port wines as well as for its high-quality dry wines produced in the Douro Valley and other regions of Portugal.

Over the years, Niepoort has acquired several vineyards, including Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in the Cima Corgo subregion, to cultivate its own old vines, some of which are over 80 years old. The winery thus produces a wide range of red, white, rosé, and fortified wines that reflect the diversity of the Douro’s schist terroirs and the family’s approach to winemaking.

Under Dirk Niepoort’s leadership, the winery has expanded its focus on modern dry wines, with vintages that combine elegance and finesse
