Our Review of the Cuvée
Domaine de l'Ecu
The Domaine de l’Ecu is located in Le Landreau, in the Nantes region, at the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine appellation. The estate was long managed by Guy Bossard, a pioneer of organic viticulture in the region, before being taken over by Fred and Claire Niger.
The vineyard covers approximately twenty hectares and has been farmed organically since 1972 and biodynamically since 1998. Vineyard and winemaking practices emphasize minimal intervention, fermentation with native yeasts, and a variety of aging methods, sometimes in amphorae.
The estate is renowned for its single-vineyard wines, which showcase the terroirs of Muscadet—particularly the granite and orthogneiss soils—as well as for its commitment to sustainable viticulture.
