Irouléguy | Rouge | 2020

The Kixka cuvée is a red wine made from Tannat and Cabernet Franc grapes grown on the steep slopes of the Bordaxuria farm, cultivated using traditional and organic methods. Situated on soil rich in red sandstone, the vineyard benefits from a south-facing exposure that contributes to optimal ripening of the grapes. This wine receives special attention at every stage, from hand-harvesting to meticulous aging in 400-liter barrels for 18 months.

Our Review of the Cuvée

Kixka boasts a deep, dark color that reflects its distinctive character. On the nose, it intensely expresses the typical aromas of the Southwest, imbued with richness and character. On the palate, this Tannat delivers a solid structure where the pronounced tannins unfold gently. The balance is subtle, supported by a hint of salinity on the finish that adds an extra dimension to the tasting experience. Paired with duck confit, this wine reveals its full potential in a delightful marriage of flavors.

Domaine Bordaxuria is located in Ispoure, in the Irouléguy wine region, and was founded in the 1980s by the Reca family. The family’s three daughters took over the estate in 2014, expanding both the winemaking and cheese-making operations of the family farm.

The estate spans 9 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are terraced on loamy and sandstone soils that are very rich in iron. The red grape varieties are primarily Tannat, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon making up the remainder, while the white varieties include Gros and Petit Manseng as well as Petit Courbu. The vineyard is in the process of converting to organic farming.

The estate produces red, white, and rosé wines, with yields carefully controlled between 22 and 30 hl/ha. The estate strives to reflect the unique terroir of the steep slopes of Irouléguy while respecting the natural balance of the vines.
