Chateau des Bachelards
Château des Bachelards was established by the Benedictine monks of Cluny around the year 1100. It is therefore the southernmost monastic vineyard in Burgundy. The Château des Bachelards vineyard now covers 18 hectares. Anecdotes from the estate: Under the stewardship of Alexandra De Vazeilles between 2014 and 2022, the Château des Bachelards vineyard demonstrated the grandeur of the Beaujolais terroir. She has since passed the torch to Matthieu Gufflet, a passionate food and wine enthusiast, who relies on the young team in place to continue the meticulous work begun by Alexandra. Now part of the Terres de Natures label, the Château's future is taking shape, embracing the values of sharing and passing on knowledge, with the development of reception and hospitality activities at Château des Bachelards. A little history of the estate: Château des Bachelards is the heart and soul of Fleurie. Its existence is owed to the Benedictine monks of Cluny Abbey who built it in the 11th century. It is the southernmost monastic property in Burgundy. "Bachelards" in Old French means "place of God." During the French Revolution, the abbey was destroyed, but the farm and other buildings survived. Today, they form the Château des Bachelards. The pride of the estate: At Château des Bachelards, vines have been cultivated organically and biodynamically since 2007. It is one of the few estates to hold dual organic and biodynamic certification, with the Demeter label for its appellations. Château des Bachelards is a pioneer in the region. The vineyards cover 18 hectares, including 6 hectares in the Fleurie appellation. The other plots are in Moulin-à-Vent, Saint-Amour, and Beaujolais Villages. We also produce two white wines: one from Chardonnay grapes under the Beaujolais appellation and the other from Viognier grapes under the IGP Comtés Rhodaniens appellation. These wines consistently receive top marks from French and international critics. Renowned for their long and complex vinification and aging processes, they embody the perfect marriage of Burgundy elegance and the lusciousness of the Rhône Valley. Our wine tourism activities are also recognized for their high quality: awarded the "Vignoble et Découverte" (Vineyard and Discovery) label for the quality of our hospitality since 2017. Château des Bachelards won the award organized by Terre de Vins magazine and was ranked among the top 100 wine estates in France in 2021.
