The Saint Emilion Grand Cru appellation produces 150,291 hl of red wines each year and benefits from a Protected Designation of Origin, which differentiates it from the Saint Emilion appellation. Indeed, it is not the geographical area that qualifies these two appellations since both are produced in the same place. To be designated as Saint Emilion Grand Cru, the yield must be limited to 40hl/ha and the maturation must be at least 12 months.
