Key Figures: Everything You Need to Know About Oenotourism
How many wine tourists visited France in 2016?
According to Atout France, 12 million French people and foreign tourists visited French vineyards in 2025. Of these visitors, 55% were French and 45% were foreign.
What are the economic benefits of wine tourism?
About €1,250: that is the average amount visitors spend during their wine tourism trips. This figure is on the rise as more foreign tourists with high purchasing power come to explore French vineyards (according to Atout France). These tourists spend an average of €250 on wine consumption and purchases made directly at the winery.
In total, wine tourism spending in France is estimated to have reached 5.2 billion euros in 2016 (figures from Atout France).
What are wine tourists' favorite places to visit?
It comes as no surprise that Bordeaux and Champagne top the list of the most visited regions by tourists. With 18% and 17.2% (Atout France figures), respectively, of the total number of wine tourists, these two regions attract more than one in three visitors. Thanks to their reputation and prestige, the two frontrunners retain the top spot in the rankings.
Next is Alsace, accounting for 16.9% of all visits, which attracts visitors with its rich terroir and unique traditions. Burgundy follows closely behind, drawing 16.2% of wine tourists.
The other wine-growing regions, such as the Loire Valley, Provence, and the Rhône Valley, account for the remainder of the visits. They accounted for 13%, 11.5%, and 11.5%, respectively, of the total number of wine tourists in 2016.
