What to drink with a ribeye steak? - Food & Wine

Rib steak or entrecôte, it's a tough choice! But perhaps you're one of those, like most French people, who prefers rib steak ! For gourmets and meat lovers, you couldn't be more delighted! Or perhaps you could, by choosing THE perfect bottle of wine that will further enhance the flavors of your dish.

Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect wine! Château, estate, region, appellation, price… We'll guide you to ensure your beef and wine pairing is a complete success!

What wine should I choose with a rib of beef?

In short, the best advice we can give you is that this cut of meat deserves good red wines ! For that, wines from the South of France are perfect! As for the bottle, you can choose:

  • A red Bordeaux wine , made from Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. You can also choose from the Saint-Emilion or Graves appellations.
  • The wines from Languedoc Roussillon , made from the Marselan or Syrah grape varieties, are perfect.

However, you can use white wine to make a sauce to accompany your meat. And if you really prefer white wines to red wines, you can choose a Riesling or a white Chablis to accompany your dish.

What wine goes with a rib of beef?

Let's put an end to the suspense… Go for a red wine ! No big surprises here, the color pairing is a classic: red wine with red meat!

Rib steak is a meat with a powerful and bloody taste, and to match it tastefully, nothing beats a nice bottle of wine.

Be careful though, not all red wines necessarily go with this cut of meat.

A wine that's too light, lacking body, won't stand up to the strong flavor of the meat and its grilled character if it's barbecued. It's better to choose a more powerful , full- bodied wine to complement this meat.

Also, remember that the results will vary depending on the cooking method and preparation method .

Choose your wine according to the cooking method.

If you're a gourmet who enjoys a rare ribeye steak, robust wines with pronounced tannins are perfect. For this, you can opt for a vintage in its youth .

Conversely, if you prefer it medium- rare or well-done, opt for a bottle that's a few years old. Its tannins will be softer , silkier, and less pronounced. The aromas often lean towards jammy dark fruits. That said, at Les Grappes, we believe nothing beats a rare ribeye steak.

What wine goes with a baked ribeye steak?

If you're planning to roast your meat in the oven , we recommend choosing a dry red wine. Grape varieties such as Marselan , Syrah , Merlot , Malbec , and Cabernet Franc are perfect for this. These are found in the southwestern regions of France.

So what names should we choose?

By choosing a bottle from the vineyards of the south of the country, you can't go wrong!

Bordeaux

For those with plenty of sunshine, we recommend wines from the Bordeaux region , and more specifically from the Lalande-de-Pomerol or Saint-Émilion appellations. These wines offer slightly more powerful profiles, with a lovely tannic structure and a pleasant creaminess on the palate. You can confidently choose the organic Lalande-de-Pomerol from Château des Annereaux.

For those who prefer silkier, spicier wines, opt for a Haut-Médoc or a Saint-Estèphe from the left bank of Bordeaux. You might find notes of blackcurrant jam and violet. We highly recommend Château L'Argilus du Roi , a wine with pronounced dark fruit aromas and silky tannins for a delicious balance.

Languedoc Roussillon

Have we ever told you that beef pairs perfectly with the garrigue aromas found in the wines of the Languedoc Roussillon region? A delight, from glass to plate!

The emblematic grape varieties of Languedoc, Marselan and Syrah, offer notes of red and black fruits, even ripe jammy fruits.

If you want to try our pairing, you can choose one of our gems from the Pays d'Hérault , such as Oscar , the cuvée from Domaine de la Dourbie , or the Oeuf Bleu from Domaine Rière Cadèn e, a Côtes du Roussillon cuvée.

The Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley is also brimming with gems to pair with beef. For perfect balance, you can opt for an appellation like Châteauneuf-du-Pape . The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grande Réserve from Château Beauchêne will be superb with a cut of meat, even more so if it's grilled on the barbecue or plancha! In this estate, the story isn't passed down from father to son, but from father to daughter! And this expertise is evident in the glass!

Why not also try a Côte Rôtie or a Saint-Joseph ! You can't go wrong with your food and wine pairing!

Which Burgundy wine goes with a rib of beef?

You can also pair your meat with a prestigious appellation from a château in the Burgundy region such as a Hautes Côtes de Nuits or a Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru from Château de Prémeaux .

What wine should I drink with a ribeye steak?

And for those who prefer ribeye to prime rib, we haven't forgotten you! It's true, you can never say no to a ribeye in a brasserie. This cut comes from the same part of the beef as the prime rib. You can enjoy it all year round. We love it even more in the summer, grilled on the barbecue. It's the perfect meal to share with friends.

To accompany your ribeye steak, we recommend 3 appellations: Saint-Emilion (Bordeaux), Gevrey-Chambertin (Burgundy), Vacqueyras (Rhône Valley).

Their distinguishing feature? They produce wines powerful enough, with a good body to complement the strong flavor of beef. Their wines are also luscious , with fruit and spice notes, such as vanilla.

Rib steak, a delight!

The rib steak is almost the caviar of meat. It's not the finest, most tender, or most beautiful cut, but it's the only one that truly means something. The rib steak is, in a way, the real connoisseur's cut.

This cut is located just above the front legs of the beef, almost on the back. Whether grilled on the barbecue, pan-fried, cooked on a griddle, or roasted in the oven, the result is rarely disappointing. Whether shared with family or friends on a summer evening, there's always a good reason to enjoy a delicious ribeye steak. Ribeye steak with homemade fries makes for a truly indulgent meal. Paired with a good bottle of wine, the combination is perfect!
