Heading to South Africa?
Today we're heading to South Africa, a beautiful country with a Mediterranean climate, where wine is made halfway between the Old and New Worlds. We'll help you choose which wineries to visit!
18 wine routes in southern Africa
The country boasts 18 wine routes. The best way to see as much as possible is to buy a ticket for the Franschhoek Wine Tram. This combination tram and open-top bus departs every half hour and stops at various wineries. It's a great way to truly enjoy the experience without having to worry about maps.
There are several possible routes: the Blue Line and the Red Line. The Blue Line takes you through the ski areas of Mont Rochelle, La Couronne, La Bourgogne, Rickety Bridge, and Grande Provence. The Red Line includes the ski areas of Chamonix, Dieu Donne, Eikehof, and Leopard's Leap.
A little teaser, you can: taste super good wine, in a historic setting, with a cheese and charcuterie platter, with an amazing view, and admire the vines placed in an old tram.
As an aside: if we find many French names in the lot, it is because the Huguenots settled in South Africa in the 17th century, on the side of Franschhoek (which means "French corner" in Afrikaans).
Constance wine, Napoleon's favorite wine
For Napoleon fans, note that Constantia wine was the Corsican's favorite: a sweet wine that helped him forget his loneliness during his exile on the island of Saint Helena. Groot Constantia is the most renowned estate, and you can enjoy a rather unusual wine and chocolate tasting there!
If you really want to avoid tourists, head to the Klein Constantia Estate (closed on Sundays, be aware) or the Eagle's Nest Estate.
We're counting on you to test it!
