Romanin Castle: A story that links the Earth, the Sun and the Moon
When Anne Marie and Jean Louis Charmolüe acquired Château Romanin in 2006, they aspired to two things: the first was to write their own history of this mythical place, the second was to break away from the standards and produce atypical wines, in their own image.
Romanin Castle: an exceptional place
The Château Romanin is the product of an extraordinary history! It was a place of worship for the Gauls, a court of love, a seat of poetry, and even a sugar factory! It has always been a source of inspiration for the great French figures who stayed there, such as Claudius Pastumus Dardanus, descendant of the Magi king Balthazar, Raymond de Gantelme, Queen Marie de Blois, and Jean Moulin.
Today, Anne Marie and Jean Louis Charmolüe, the former owners of Château Montrose, a second-growth classified wine of Saint-Estèphe , are at the helm of the estate. When they took over the property in 2006, everything was yet to be done. They meticulously selected the most expressive grape varieties for this magnificent terroir, renowned for its red wines, and planted white varieties such as Rolle, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Clairette. They also restored the estate's winery, which is one of the first "architectural wineries" in France. Its unique feature is that it is built into the rock, according to the stars and the principles of the Château's original builders.
Our favorite wines from the estate:
Non-standardized wines
Prioritizing the relationship between the Universe and Earth's magnetism, they clearly adhere to biodynamic principles, employing agronomic techniques. This sustainable viticulture approach leads them to use no chemical products or herbicides, instead relying on fertilizers and preparations made from plants and minerals, applied according to the rhythms of the Earth and the Cosmos.
Described by wine guides as "producers of monumental wines" during their time in Saint-Estèphe , Jean-Louis and Anne-Marie have sought a precise and innovative winemaking approach for Romanin, rejecting the dictates and standardization of tastes. They allow each vintage to fully express itself with the utmost respect for the grapes. The harvest is done entirely by hand, and the bunches are meticulously sorted by plot before being sent directly to the cold storage room.
Drawing inspiration from the aging of great Pomerol wines, the result is wines with an ethereal character, with a warm, mineral, ample and delicate structure.
