Château Romanin: Terroir, Sunshine, and Biodynamics
When Anne Marie and Jean Louis Charmolüe purchased Château Romanin in 2006, they had two goals in mind: first, to write their own chapter in the history of this legendary estate; and second, to break away from convention and produce unique wines that reflect their own personalities.
Château Romanin: an exceptional place
Château Romanin is the product of an extraordinary history! It served as a place of worship for the Gauls, a court of love, a center for poetry, and even a sugar factory! It has always been a source of inspiration for the great French figures who have stayed there, such as Claudius Pastumus Dardanus, a descendant of the Magi King Balthazar; Raymond de Gantelme; Queen Marie de Blois; and Jean Moulin.
Today, Anne Marie and Jean Louis Charmolüe are at the helm of the estate; they are none other than the former owners of Château Montrose, a Second Growth in Saint-Estèphe. When they took over the estate in 2006, there was much work to be done. They set about carefully selecting the most expressive red grape varieties for this magnificent terroir and planted white varieties such as Rolle, Roussanne, White Grenache, and Clairette. They also restored the estate’s wine cellar, which is one of the first “architectural cellars” in France. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is built into the rock and constructed according to the stars and the criteria of the Château’s ancestral builders.

Non-standard wines
Focusing on the relationship between the universe and the Earth’s magnetic field, their approach is clearly rooted in biodynamics, utilizing agronomic techniques. This sustainable viticulture method leads them to avoid the use of any chemicals or herbicides, relying instead on manure and preparations made from plants and minerals, applied in accordance with the rhythms of the Earth and the cosmos.
Described by wine guides as “producers of monumental wines” during their time in Saint-Estèphe, Jean-Louis and Anne-Marie have sought to bring a precise and innovative winemaking approach to Romanin, rejecting the dictates and standardization of taste. They allow each vintage to express itself fully, with the utmost respect for the grapes. The harvest is done by hand, and the grapes are meticulously sorted by plot before being taken directly to the cold storage room.
Drawing inspiration from the winemaking traditions of Pomerol, the result is wines with an airy character, featuring a warm, mineral-driven structure that is both full-bodied and delicate.
