Cahors Haute Côt de Fruit 2024

Cahors | Rouge | 2024

Cultivated biodynamically on limestone and clay soils at an altitude of 350m, this Malbec comes from 25-year-old vines. Harvested manually, destemmed, then macerated for seven days in concrete vats, it is aged for six months in the same vats. Bottled without filtration or fining – with a micro-dose of sulfur at bottling. The style is fruity, supple, and digestible, with a pure expression of the terroir.

Our Review of the Cuvée

The color is dark, deep, and dense. The nose reveals notes of stewed black fruits – blackberry and blackcurrant – underscored by sweet spices and a slight herbaceous touch. On the palate, the attack is juicy and lively, driven by vibrant fruit and a silky texture. The tannins are present but integrated, the body is balanced and digestible. The finish is long and spicy, with a distinct saline freshness that prolongs the enjoyment. An accessible and delightful Cahors, ideal with grilled meats, charcuterie, or tapas.

Mas del Périé - Fabien Jouves

Mas del Périé

Languedoc | France

In Cahors, Fabien Jouves manages Mas del Périé, employing a precise plot-by-plot approach to Malbec cultivation. The various cuvées are crafted based on the geology of the plateau and hillsides, contrasting calcareous soils, which impart verticality and tension, with deeper clay soils, which contribute body and density.

Biodynamic practices underpin the entire process, from soil management to vinification. The aging process utilizes various vessels—amphorae, foudres, and barriques—employed as fine-tuning tools to refine the profiles without obscuring the expression of the grape or the terroir.

The wines maintain a clear definition, featuring precise dark fruit and structures that are never heavy. The finishes remain discernible and balanced, reflecting an approach where each cuvée offers a distinct and coherent interpretation of the various facets of the Cahors plateau.
