Everything You Need to Know About the Jura Region

The Jura is a wine-growing region in eastern France, known for its wines with a distinct character and unique styles. The Jura vineyards are characterized by a cool climate, moderate yields, and a strong identity rooted in the local soils and grape varieties. The region primarily produces white wines, but it also offers reds and sparkling wines.

A region shaped by its geology

The Jura wine region is primarily built on limestone and marl soils, rich in fossils from the Jurassic period, which gave the region its name. This subsoil, combined with a cool, continental climate, produces wines that are crisp, precise, and have good aging potential.

The vines thrive on south-facing slopes, allowing the grapes to ripen gradually and bringing out the distinctive character of the terroir.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

White wines account for about 80% of Jura’s production. They are often made as blends, primarily from two main grape varieties:

  • Savagnin, the Jura’s signature grape variety, is the source of the region’s most distinctive wines

  • Chardonnay, which brings finesse, balance, and freshness

For red wines, the grape varieties used are:

  • Poulsard, light and fruity

  • Trousseau, more structured and spicy

  • Pinot Noir, more classic and elegant

On the nose, the whites offer aromas of apple, peach, and sometimes dried fruit. The reds feature notes of candied red berries and spices, with a lovely, lingering finish.

The Jura's iconic wines

The Jura region is known for several distinctive styles of wine:

  • Vin Jaune: a dry, aromatic wine with notes of hazelnut, sometimes enhanced with spices such as turmeric, ginger, or cardamom

  • Straw Wine: a sweet wine with aromas of candied fruit, honey, and hazelnut, balanced by a lovely acidity

  • Crémant du Jura: a sparkling wine made from at least 50% Chardonnay, prized for its freshness and elegance

These wines play a major role in shaping the region’s identity.

Food and Wine Pairings from the Jura

Jura wines pair naturally with regional cuisine.
Distinctive white wines, such as Vin Jaune or Macvin du Jura, pair well with cream-based dishes, mushrooms, spicy dishes, or the traditional coq au vin jaune.
They also pair well with rind-ripened cheeses from the Jura and Franche-Comté regions.

Red wines pair well with roasted meats, poultry, lamb, or certain grilled fish.
