Mondeuse du Bugey 2022

Bugey | Rouge | 2022

This wine stands out for its authentic winemaking process, which respects the distinctive character of the Mondeuse grape. Hand-harvested in Montagnieu, it undergoes whole-cluster fermentation followed by maceration in open tanks to fully express its aromas. Avoiding traditional oak aging, Peillot prefers aging in stainless steel tanks, revealing a lush texture with irresistible fruit and a bold yet balanced tannic structure. Ideal for lovers of rustic wines, this Mondeuse is synonymous with finesse and aromatic freshness.

Our Review of the Cuvée

The first thing you notice is the deep purple color, almost mystical in its translucence. On the nose, dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry play hide-and-seek with more subtle notes of spice and violet. On the palate, it unfolds with exquisite tension: the structure is as light and airy as it is refined, allowing a delicately pulpy texture to glide across the palate. The finish is a veritable fireworks display of spices and fruit, with a chalky mouthfeel that invites an immediate return. The Mondeuse grape variety thus reveals all its rustic character, heightened by this fruity liveliness.

At the foot of Montagnieu, Peillot explores the Altesse and Mondeuse varieties with admirable precision. The whites, crisp but never austere, develop notes of ripe citrus and warm stone. The estate’s sparkling wines, produced using the traditional method, offer fine bubbles and a surprising energy for the region. The reds, rarer, display a frank, slightly spicy character. An estate that showcases the still-underestimated potential of Bugey.
