The Bordeaux regional appellation is produced throughout the Bordeaux vineyard. The vineyard covers 42,600 ha and produces 2,236,700 hl of wine per year. The red wines of Bordeaux are mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet franc can also be part of the blend, which then brings roundness and spices. In some blends, petit verdot, malbec and carmenère are used as accessory grape varieties.
