Discover the vineyards of the Rhône Valley in this video: between vines and olive trees
If you've just arrived in the region , start your exploration of the local area at the Château de Suze-la-Rousse . More than just a magnificent medieval fortress, it houses an interesting museum dedicated to wine and its history in the Drôme.
But that's not all! It also houses a renowned wine university that has planted 70 grape varieties in this vineyard garden. Perfect for learning to identify those of the region !
As you quickly notice while driving through the Drôme Provençale, vineyards grow alongside olive groves. Before the 1960s, olives were even one of the main crops. But the frosts of 1929 and 1956 were so devastating that the olive trees gave way to the less fragile vines. The history of Vinsobres , a Côtes du Rhône cru, is emblematic of this reversal. So much so that the village of the same name is now perched in the middle of an amphitheater of vines that produce intensely red wines with a characteristic freshness.
From north to south , between vineyards and olive groves, there are professions of passionate people who participate in shaping the landscapes, in culture, in gastronomy…and who love to share their know-how!
