Everything You Need to Know About Condrieu
It’s surprising to find nothing but Viognier in this northern vineyard of the Rhône Valley. A single-varietal appellation is always intriguing! Condrieu is a little gem of a wine region covering 130 hectares, whose wine apparently appealed to the nobility of the 15th century… and well, in the 21st century, it still appeals—to everyone! Only white wines are produced in Condrieu. The acidity of the soil, composed mainly of granite, is retained by terraces overlooking the region’s hillsides. Magnificent vineyards cover this wine-growing region. All of this can only result in famous white wines! In the southern part of the Rhône Valley, the climate is predominantly Mediterranean. The elegance of its color is remarkable—a pale yellow with hints of emerald—and evolves over time. In its youth, the freshness of its bouquet reveals floral and fruity aromas like violet and apricot, but as the years pass, these give way to sweeter notes of honey. On the palate, the wine is relatively low in acidity, even though it is classified as a “dry” wine, which is what makes it unique and renowned. Its smoothness and mellowness provide an incomparable aromatic balance. This generous, complex wine pairs beautifully with fish, foie gras, or fine cheeses!
