Sauternes
Sauternes
The Sauternes vineyards are located near the Gironde estuary. Sauternes white wines are made from grape varieties such as Sémillon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. This white wine region enjoys a worldwide reputation, thanks to its twenty or so Grand Cru vineyards classified in 1855! Considered among the finest sweet wines, with internationally renowned châteaux such as Château d'Yquem, the vineyards are planted on diverse soils (clay, limestone), with layers of gravel. Its reputation stems from its microclimate, which allows the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), responsible for the wine's finesse and elegance. It is a wine with excellent aging potential, reaching 25 years, or even 100 for the Grand Crus. With a golden hue, it offers aromas of candied fruit and apricot, accompanied by citrus acidity and honey with hints of spice. It boasts a refreshing character and a lovely, lingering finish. In terms of food pairings, it complements dishes such as foie gras, Roquefort cheese, shellfish, and even exotic cuisine. A nectar not to be missed! Sauternes Wine Route
