Everything You Need to Know About Sauternes
The Sauternes wine region is located on the banks of the Gironde River. Sauternes white wines are made from grape varieties such as Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle. This white wine region enjoys a worldwide reputation, thanks to its two dozen Grand Crus classified in 1855! Considered among the finest sweet wines, with internationally renowned châteaux such as Château d’Yquem, the vineyards are planted on diverse soils (clay, limestone) with layers of gravel. Its reputation stems from its microclimate, which allows for the development of noble rot (Botrytis Cinerea), responsible for the finesse and elegance of this wine. It is a wine with great aging potential, capable of aging for up to 25 years, or even 100 years for the grand crus. With a golden hue, it offers aromas of candied fruit and apricot, accompanied by citrus acidity and honey notes reminiscent of spices. It possesses a refreshing quality and a lovely length on the palate. On the food pairing front, it pairs well with dishes such as foie gras, Roquefort cheese, shellfish, or even exotic cuisine.
