What to drink with pork chop? - Food & Wine Pairings
Our beloved pork chop can be prepared in countless ways: plain, with cream and mushrooms, with mustard, with figs, Mediterranean-style, Thai-style, with pepper, braised, glazed with honey, breaded and baked, au gratin, with Chaource cheese and walnuts, paella-style… It’s.
As with all dishes that can be prepared in various ways, you simply have to ask yourself: Does my preparation overpower the meat in terms of flavor?
If that's not the case, you can open a fairly light red wine:
- A Fleurie from Beaujolais
- A Bourgueil from the Loire
- A Bordeaux Supérieur
- A town in the Loire region
- A Pinot Noir from Alsace
If so, you have to agree based on the accompaniment… That’s where things get complicated!
Let's look at two examples:
- What wine goes well with pork chops in a mushroom cream sauce: since the cream and mushrooms won’t overpower the meat, you can choose one of the wines listed above, or if you prefer a more full-bodied wine, such as:
- What wine goes well with a paella-style pork chop? Let’s just say that the paella tends to overpower the meat in terms of flavor. So choose a wine that pairs better with the paella than with the pork chop—a more full-bodied wine, a wine with a sunny character:
- A Minervois from Languedoc
- A Corbières from the Languedoc
- A Gigondas from the Côtes-du-Rhône
- A Côte-de-Provence
Other pork chop recipes:
- What wine goes well with honey-glazed pork chops: A red Beaumes-de-Venise from the Côtes-du-Rhône
- Pork chops with Chaource cheese and walnuts: A Mercurey from Burgundy, a Pernand-Vergelesses from Burgundy
- Pork Chops with Figs: A Touraine Gamay
- Pork chops with mustard: A Médoc from Bordeaux and a Fronsac from the Southwest.
