Adrien Berlioz - Cellier des Cray
At the heart of the Chignin Bergeron vineyard, Adrien Berlioz is now one of the most distinctive voices in Savoie wine. Located in Chignin, in the Alpine foothills of Savoie, he took over the family estate in 2006 and gradually transformed it into a respected artisanal benchmark for the quality of his wines and the clarity of his approach.
Adrien's vineyard spans approximately 7 hectares, divided into 17 micro-parcels, often situated on steep slopes that can reach a 50% gradient, necessitating entirely manual intervention. The clay-limestone soils, rich in scree, moraines, and schist, impart an intense mineral energy and precise maturity to the grapes, characteristic of the region's steep terroirs.
Vineyard management is guided by a commitment to absolute respect for living things: certified organic since 2012 and Demeter-certified biodynamic since 2020, with manual labor, no herbicides or chemical fertilizers, and the use of cover crops and animal-drawn implements depending on the plot. Adrien pays particular attention to biodiversity, the soil, and the health of the vines, convinced that the quality of the fruit is determined first and foremost in the vineyard.
The grape varieties grown here are deeply rooted in Savoyard tradition:
• Jacquère and Altesse for the white wines, which are fresh and vibrant,
• Roussanne (Bergeron) and Malvoisie, which bring richness and complexity,
• Mondeuse Noire, Persan, and Douce Noire for the red wines, which are structured and deep.
The winemaking process is designed to allow each vineyard block to express itself authentically: hand-harvesting, natural fermentation with indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention in the cellar, and tailored aging (stainless steel tanks, demi-muids, etc.) to preserve aromatic clarity and freshness. The result? Wines of great purity, striking minerality, and vibrant elegance, faithfully reflecting the alpine character of their terroir.
Among the estate’s iconic vintages, some bear names that tell personal stories or highlight the character of a specific vineyard—each a unique signature within a collection defined by finesse, precision, and emotion.
