Pessac-Léognan | Rouge | 2018

The 2018 Château de Léognan is THE estate’s premier red wine, produced from 6 hectares of gravel and sand dating back to the Tertiary period.

Since 2007, Chantal and Philippe Miecaze have breathed new life into this historic Léognan estate through plot-by-plot cultivation and hand-harvesting, accompanied by a two-step sorting process for the grapes.

Winemaking takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the fruit’s precision and the expression of the individual plots. The wine is then aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels—some of which are new—to develop its depth without masking the terroir.

Our Review of the Cuvée

The deep garnet color still reveals beautiful intensity after several years of aging. The nose opens with blackcurrant and ripe red fruits, accompanied by hints of blackberry, graphite, and delicate spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-balanced, supported by fine tannins that have softened with age. A lovely freshness underpins the fruit and lends the wine a lively character. The long, elegant finish reveals lovely woody and spicy notes, characteristic of a Pessac-Léognan that has reached full maturity.

Château de Léognan

Château de Léognan

Bordeaux | France

Taken over in 2007 by Chantal and Philippe Miecaze, Château de Léognan is a 6-hectare family-owned estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Driven by a longstanding passion for wine, they restored the 17th–19th-century château and breathed new life into this historic site, once frequented by François Mauriac. The vineyard, planted and meticulously tended, sits on gravel soils ideal for the optimal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, nestled within an environment sheltered by the Landes pine forest. The high-density vines are harvested by hand with successive sorting to ensure impeccable quality. Production is resolutely focused on excellence and is part of a renaissance initiative, a powerful symbol of the estate’s identity. The wines of Château de Léognan are now regularly awarded prizes and praised by international competitions and the specialized press.
