15 questions to ask the winemaker during your vineyard visit
Visiting a winemaker might seem simple. But your enjoyment and theirs are closely linked, so it's best to have a few questions in mind before arriving at the winery. Traditionally, a winery visit unfolds in several stages: the vineyard, the winery, and then the tasting room. Each part of the vineyard will undoubtedly pique your curiosity. But you still need to know the right questions to leave with a comprehensive understanding of the vineyard and the winemaker's craft. Below, you'll find 15 questions to ask the winemaker during your visit!
The vineyards : magnificent and complex places. This will be your chance to take a deep breath and appreciate the beauty of these crops. Often cultivated across several plots, they will undoubtedly be a feast for the eyes. As you stroll through them, you can ask:
- What is the area of the estate?
- What grape varieties are cultivated?
- What are the yields per hectare?
- How many grape harvesters come each year to help with the harvest?
- What is the planting density?
- What type of soil is it?
The wine cellars : the place where it all happens. Depending on the estate, you'll find the fermentation tanks and/or the aging cellars. Those with a sensitive nose, beware! As in beer breweries or whisky distilleries, the smells are strong due to the reaction between bacteria and the grapes. Nevertheless, these are magnificent places, like the cellars of the legendary Château de Meursault (Burgundy) or the grand Château d'Yquem (Sauternes). Don't forget to ask:
- What is the capacity of the tanks?
- Are there any additives used during the winemaking process?
- How to control the alcohol content of wine during winemaking?
- How many barrels are present?
- Are they oak barrels? Stainless steel?
- For how many months does this vintage remain in the barrel?
- What impact does the stainless steel barrel/tank have on the wines? And on the tasting experience?
The cellar : for a unique moment of sharing with the winemaker. This is where the winemaker lets you taste the fruits of their labor. It's worth noting that from vine to bottle, it can sometimes take more than two years: the winemaker is therefore always happy to share their wine with visitors. Whether you're a novice or an expert in the art of wine tasting , ask:
- Which vintage is most influenced by the terroir? (soils, climate, etc.)
- Which is your favorite and why?
By asking these questions, you'll become an expert on the vineyard and what the winemaker does all day. Beyond your knowledge of the subject, these questions will also show the winemaker that you have a genuine interest in their world: the guarantee of a successful visit!
