What to Drink with Trout? - Food & Wine Pairings
If you are pressed for time
Trout has white, tender flesh that could use a little zing. That’s why it’s often served with herbs, in which case you’ll want to pair it with a light, aromatic dry white wine such as:
- Côtes de Bourg
- Hills of Aix-en-Provence
- If you're going for a citrus- or spice-flavored cocktail, go for a Chablis instead.
Pairing trout with wine
Trout has white flesh; it’s a fish with a mild flavor that’s often served with herbs and lemon to enhance it. Fish is typically paired with white wine, and trout is no exception. Opt for a dry white wine with a lively character and citrus notes to bring out the flavor of the white fish. A touch of acidity will complement your fish. You’ll want a white wine with a lively palate to brighten the dish. If you’re making a citrus-infused papillote, you might want to opt for a slightly less lively white wine to avoid too much acidity on the palate. For dishes with spices, choose a more powerful, mineral-driven white wine.
Wines that will delight you
If you’re keeping it simple with just a few herbs and lemon to accompany the trout, a light, aromatic dry white wine like a Côtes de Bourg will do the trick, or perhaps a Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence. If you’re using spices or citrus fruits, you’ll need a more robust and mineral-driven aromatic dry white wine, such as a Chablis from the Burgundy region.
Trout
Ah, I can already smell grilled trout this summer! This fish, which swims upstream in rivers, is sure to tempt many a food lover. Caught by humans for centuries, trout is a fish of choice—and above all, it’s delicious! Whether baked in foil in the oven, grilled on the barbecue with a slice of bacon between the fillets like our friends in Aveyron do, baked with herbs and lemon, or enjoyed smoked, nothing is too good for this fish. In addition to its great taste, trout has excellent nutritional value since it’s a fish rich in omega-3, phosphorus, and vitamin B—as nutritionists will tell you. So with all that, if you don’t want to grab a nice trout (and not cooked) for lunch with friends this summer, I just don’t get you!
