Welcome to the Lejeune Champagne House
Sandrine and Pascal Lejeune are the winemakers of Maison Lejeune in Champagne , a family estate on the southern slopes of Épernay. They were recently joined by their son Thibaut, and together they are working towards the same goal: to share their terroir-driven Champagnes. Sandrine tells us:
A family adventure spanning generations
The story begins in the 19th century with Edmond, Sandrine's great-grandfather. The land, located on the southern slopes of Epernay, has been passed down through generations. In 1995, first Pascal, then Sandrine, left their jobs to take over the family business. "We have two different backgrounds, which allows us to be very complementary and in harmony."
Today, Thibaut joined them on the property: “ He’s been with us for a year now. It’s great because he’s very motivated in the work and the care of the vines and the soil, ” Sandrine emphasizes. The arrival of this new generation signals a promise of family succession that Sandrine hopes for: “ We must secure the future for our children.”
The vineyards of Maison Lejeune
The vineyard is located across four communes: Pierry, Vinay, Moussy, and Epernay, the capital of Champagne, on the southern slopes of Epernay. Like other Champagne vineyards, Maison Lejeune comprises some 42 plots planted primarily with Pinot Meunier . " For the 2015 harvest, we will be releasing a 100% Pinot Meunier cuvée . We wanted to showcase these very old vines, which are of very high quality and have reached excellent ripeness, " explains Sandrine.
The quality of the grapes is essential to the quality of Champagne : " The bulk of the work is done in the vineyard. " With this in mind, Sandrine and Pascal are deeply committed to preserving the terroir: " When we took over the estate, we made an environmental shift. Products have evolved, allowing us to adapt our working practices, " notes Sandrine. " We've been using cover cropping in the vineyards for over 18 years. At the time, we were among the first to implement this technique in Champagne."
It is therefore very logical that Pascal and Sandrine obtained the two labels " High Environmental Value " and " Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne ".
"Our sole objective: to offer you terroir-driven champagnes"
The result of this work is harmonious and fresh Champagnes, made from carefully worked grapes, rigorous cellar work, relevant blends and several months of aging on lees: " for all occasions and all tastes ".
" Champagne Brut is the first cuvée of our House. Both harmonious and indulgent, it embodies the image and style of our family. "
The reserve cuvée is a subtle blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier: "Its vivacity and balance make it a champagne to be enjoyed at any time of day, with friends as an aperitif or around a table."
The crisp and fresh rosé Champagne , perfect for the summer season, and the Blanc de Blanc made exclusively from Chardonnay grapes, harmoniously complete the range.
The rosé from the Champagne range of Maison Lejeune
Finally, the crown jewel of the Lejeune house: the 2000 vintage : " Made exclusively with Chardonnay grapes, this top-of-the-range 2000 vintage will delight connoisseurs not only with its balance and freshness, but also with the aromatic complexity imparted by partial aging in oak barrels. An exceptional champagne for exceptional moments."
The final word:
"What do I like about being a winemaker? The exchange and sharing. We are lucky to have people around us who are interested in our work. We meet wonderful, completely different people. It's enjoyable, it gives us an opening to the outside world."
Our advice : Keep the festive spirit alive by coming to discover Champagne Lejeune sur les Grappes .
