Elise Gaillard: "There is a lack of interest in our young winemakers."
Diary entry #3: I found it harder to be young than to be a woman . We're often not taken seriously, and we're rarely listened to. But I've always loved a challenge!
Elise Gaillard , daughter of Pierre Gaillard, talks to us about the credibility of young winemakers
There's very little mixing of generations (the "old" with the "old," the "young" with the "young"!). I was quite surprised by the lack of interest in young winemakers , the newcomers. And I'm not necessarily talking about myself, who's lucky enough to be a "daughter of," but I've observed this quite often!
The guides tend to focus on established fields, but consumers are more likely to go to people they've already met and trust (that seems obvious!). And I don't think you're really considered credible until you're over 40! Luckily, I have a few gray hairs to lend some credibility (and a nice surname!).
Elise Gaillard, a combative winemaker from Domaine Madeloc
When I arrived in Banyuls , I had just finished my studies. I had traveled a lot (and had a blast!), and now things were getting serious! It was a lot to manage on my own, but I was raring to go! I love challenges, and I started with that mindset (and I still do!). The first slightly difficult thing for me was realizing that I actually knew nothing! I thought I had learned things at school, during my internships, and my summer jobs… But there are so many concepts to learn that all of that was nothing! I called my father every day: mostly with technical questions, because my training wasn't very technical. Is it better to put the pump before or after the filter?! What tool do you use to clean the tanks?
What's the point of this thing? ... I've been asked that question a lot!
