"Making wine is like being a magician."
Nicolas Meylan spent 17 years of his life making wine… but for others! Since 2012, he has been creating a wine that reflects his terroir in the Médoc region of Bordeaux and his own personality. Today, he tells us what he loves so much about being a winemaker.
Hello Nicolas, can you tell us about your background… and why wine?
A graduate in oenology, I was immersed in wine from childhood thanks to my parents, true enthusiasts and sensitive to the poetry of this product. Discovering the world of agriculture, participating in the magic of transforming grapes into wine, and finally, making numerous and enriching connections—that's why I love this profession.
If you had to embody a wine?
A Clos Rougeart , which combines finesse and complexity.
What is your favorite time of year?
Winter is the only quiet time in the vineyards for us winemakers. I particularly like Sunday mornings, when I go out to prune the vines at sunrise accompanied by my dog: a unique and peaceful moment.
If you had to define your temperament?
I pay attention to every detail; producing wine requires constant organization and rigor. My sensitivity is also important: letting my emotions guide me so that my wine can express itself.
Do you have an anecdote to share with us?
Or rather, a book: Taste and Power , by Jonathan Nossiter. Or how a book can answer a personal question and convince me to develop an unconventional medicine .
A meeting that left a lasting impression on you?
A farmer at heart with whom I had the chance to work. At the time, respectively Cellar Master and Estate Manager, he not only gave me a taste for working in the vineyards but also taught me a working methodology and essential principles that I still put into practice today.
What do you find unbearable about the world of wine?
People with unwavering convictions: what a shame in our profession!
