Tout savoir sur Région Beaujolais

Everything you need to know about the Beaujolais region

Beaujolais is a wine region located between Mâcon and Lyon, in southern Burgundy. Long associated with Beaujolais Nouveau, the region actually offers a wide variety of wines, primarily reds, but also whites and some rosés. Beaujolais is distinguished by its emblematic grape variety, Gamay, and by the diversity of its terroirs.

A wine region in its own right

The Beaujolais vineyard stretches for approximately 55 kilometers from north to south and 20 kilometers in width , primarily within the Rhône department. Although historically linked to Burgundy, Beaujolais possesses its own distinct identity, both in its grape varieties and its winemaking practices.

The climate is predominantly continental, with oceanic and Mediterranean influences depending on the area. Summers are generally sunny, while winters can be cold, with a risk of frost in spring.

Very varied soils

The Beaujolais region is based on a great geological diversity, with more than 70 types of soil identified.
In the north of the region, the soils are mainly granitic and sandy , favoring fine, aromatic and structured wines.
To the south, the soils become more clay-limestone and sedimentary , giving wines that are more supple and approachable.

This diversity of soils explains the marked differences between the appellations and styles of wines.

Beaujolais appellations

The vineyard is structured around several levels of appellations:

  • Beaujolais

  • Beaujolais-Villages

  • Beaujolais Nouveau and Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau

  • The 10 Beaujolais Crus :
Saint-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly

Some areas also allow the production of Coteaux Bourguignons or Crémant de Bourgogne , in connection with neighbouring Burgundy.

Grape varieties and wine styles

The main grape variety of Beaujolais is Gamay , almost exclusively used for red wines. It produces wines with a ruby color, aromas of red fruits (cherry, strawberry, redcurrant, plum), with profiles ranging from light and fruity wines to more structured cuvées suitable for aging, particularly in certain crus.

The white wines are made from Chardonnay grapes . They are generally dry, balanced and aromatic, with notes of white fruit and flowers.

Food and wine pairings from Beaujolais

Beaujolais red wines pair well with charcuterie, poultry, stews and traditional cuisine.
More structured wines also pair well with dishes like beef bourguignon or veal blanquette.

White wines can be enjoyed with fish, cheeses (especially fresh or goat cheese) and poultry.
Rosé wines, which are rarer, are suitable for aperitifs or light meals.
