Everything You Need to Know About Savoie

Without a doubt, the best wine-and-cheese pairings come from Savoie! What could be better than a Savoie white wine, enjoyed with a plate of raclette, cozy and warm in a chalet? Viticulture plays a key role in the region’s agricultural economy. The vineyards of the Hautes-Alpes also have the distinction of thriving in magnificent landscapes, on the scree of cliffs or along riverbanks. Wines of Roussillon Blending Catalan traditions with unique terroirs, the wines of Roussillon are part of a long history marked by the production of natural sweet wines and powerful reds. An ideal Mediterranean climate Hot, dry summers, rainy autumns, stormy springs: the perfect conditions for vines and fruit (plums, peaches, cherries, grapes…). A mosaic of terroirs The vineyards rest on highly varied soils: schist, gneiss, limestone, alluvial terraces, granite, and clay-limestone shape the diversity of the wines. Naturally sweet wines, a historic specialty Roussillon excels in naturally sweet wines (VDN). The most famous: Banyuls Grand Cru, made from Grenache, aged in barrels or jars in the sun—sometimes under the rafters—to capture the region’s sunny spirit. The taste of “rancio” Through oxidative aging, certain Banyuls develop notes of raisins and hazelnut, with a typical rancio touch. These wines are remarkable pairings for chocolate. The revival of dry wines Long underrated, Roussillon’s dry reds are gaining recognition. Old vines, schist soils, and a warm climate now produce powerful, aromatic red wines. Intense and elegant whites Roussillon also offers mineral-driven, precise whites that pair perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine (anchovies, oysters, apricots). The main AOCs - Côtes-du-Roussillon: the majority of reds and whites
- Côtes-du-Roussillon-Villages: northern part of the region
- Côtes-du-Roussillon-Les-Aspres: premium wines from the south A wine region between sea and mountains Nestled between the Canigou, Corbières, and Albères mountain ranges and the Mediterranean Sea, the region benefits from varied terrain: alluvial plains, terraces, and foothills. Visit the Roussillon estates Meet the winemakers: Res Fortes Wines (Agly Valley – biodynamic) or Domaine Lafage (Perpignan), rich in terroirs and experiences. Food and red wine pairings Roussillon reds are best enjoyed as an aperitif or with a nice cut of red meat, for moments of conviviality. Food and white wine pairings Serve them with oysters, Collioure anchovies, apricot salad, or typical Catalan dishes.
