Everything You Need to Know About Wines of the World
Discovering Wines from Around the World
Foreign wines hold a special place in our selection. They allow us to broaden our horizons, discover other grape varieties, other terroirs, and other winemaking methods. From the Mediterranean basin to high-altitude vineyards, and from Atlantic regions to continental areas, these wines offer a wide variety of styles and expressions.
At Les Grappes, foreign wines are selected with the same high standards as French wines: we focus on the terroir, the winemaker’s craftsmanship, and the wine’s character as it appears in the glass.
A wide variety of countries and regions
The selection includes wines from many renowned wine-producing countries, including Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Greece, Georgia, Lebanon, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
Every country has its own iconic wine regions:
Piedmont, Tuscany, Sicily, Rioja, Priorat, Douro, Alentejo, Moselle, Rheinhessen, Burgenland, Tokaj, Kakheti, Uco Valley, Maipo, McLaren Vale, Santorini, Bekaa Valley…
Each of these regions has a distinct identity shaped by its geography, climate, and winemaking history.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
Foreign wines offer the chance to discover a wide variety of grape varieties, some of which are rarely found in France or express themselves differently depending on their terroir. They include both international grape varieties and local varieties with a strong sense of identity.
The selection includes:
-
full-bodied or more supple red wines
-
dry, aromatic, mineral, or fuller-bodied white wines
-
rosé wines
-
sparkling wines
-
sweet, fortified, or oxidative wines (Port, Madeira, Sherry, Montilla-Moriles, Tokaj, etc.)
Some wines come from recognized appellations, while others are intentionally classified as “off-appellation” to give winemakers more freedom.
Different Approaches to Viticulture
The selected wineries follow a wide range of philosophies: sustainable agriculture, organic farming, biodynamic farming, natural wines, or more traditional approaches. This diversity reflects the richness of the international wine world and allows us to offer both accessible wines and more niche selections.
Many of these wines offer excellent value for money, while also standing out from French wines in their own unique way.
Food and Wine Pairings
Foreign wines are often very versatile at the table.
Red wines pair well with grilled meats, stews, and spicy dishes.
White wines pair well with fish, seafood, vegetables, cheese, and international cuisine.
Sweet and fortified wines are naturally suited as aperitifs, with desserts, or in sweet-and-savory pairings.
An open and evolving selection
The "Foreign Wines" category includes both well-known estates and lesser-known producers, featuring a deliberately broad selection of countries, appellations, and styles. It is regularly updated as new wines and vintages are discovered.
These wines allow you to explore vineyards around the world without leaving your table, while staying true to a cohesive, accessible, and pleasure-oriented selection.
