Exclusive: the 4 architect-designed wineries to visit in France!
Château La Dominique
The winery at this Saint-Émilion château underwent a stunning renovation in 2013, enlisting the services of Jean Nouvel. This renowned architect's portfolio includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Cartier Foundation, and the Philharmonie de Paris: needless to say, this winery was in good hands. The result? A complete overhaul in shades of red and light wood. From the vineyard, you can see the building's long, glossy plastic-clad extension. Inside, the atmosphere is decidedly modern, with remarkable attention paid to the layout and perspectives.
Our advice: take advantage of the simply furnished outdoor space to enjoy a glass of wine from the Château.
Romanin Castle
Head to Provence to discover Château Romanin. This 58-hectare estate (42 hectares of vineyards, 4 of olive groves, and 2 of almond orchards) unfolds before you between Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Eygalières. Upon arrival, you'll be awestruck by the sheer beauty of the place. This 13th-century château is nestled among vineyards, mountains, and woods. Inside, you'll discover an exceptional space: a wine cellar built using techniques employed for Gothic cathedrals. With its soaring ceilings and meticulous details, your gaze will be drawn to its breathtaking beauty. In short, it's a place steeped in history within a magnificent landscape: well worth the detour!
Don't miss: take a stroll through the olive grove under the southern sun: relaxation guaranteed.
Château Cheval Blanc
In 2011, Christian de Portzamparc designed the winery for the legendary Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion. The Bernard Arnault estate's winery was completely redesigned and constructed entirely of concrete. The Moroccan-born architect chose fluid curves that create a long, elongated building: the Cheval Blanc canopy was born. From the outside, the winery is striking at first glance, then blends harmoniously into the landscape. Inside, concrete is omnipresent. The vats impress with their size and number, while the room housing the aging barrels is warmed by the use of light-colored concrete.
Don't miss: take a stroll at nightfall along the path created by the arches of this winery.
Ballande and Méneret Logistics Cellar
Located in the heart of Bordeaux, between La Cité du Vin and the Wine and Trade Museum, this logistics warehouse stands out in the southwestern city. Resembling a UFO with its almost too-perfect rectangular shape, this concrete block transforms at night, illuminating itself with orange lights: a truly captivating experience! Inside, no fewer than 4 million bottles are stored within its 10,000 square meters of space.
Bonus tip: take a walk around this building at nightfall, in the pine forest that surrounds it!
