Discovering the Fleurie AOC
Updated on December 14, 2022
Winemaker and journalist Laetitia Allemand takes us to Fleurie to discover one of the 10 Beaujolais crus. Looking for a good place to taste Fleurie AOC wines? What dishes pair well with this Beaujolais cru? Laetitia answers your questions.
Discovering Fleurie
What a beautiful view we have from here, don't you think? I'm at the foot of the Chapel of the Madonna, right in the heart of the village of Fleurie. As is often the case in this region, this chapel is said to have been built to invoke the Virgin Mary's protection against vine disease. It seems to be working!
Here, we're over 400 meters above sea level . Needless to say, the vines and winemakers of Fleurie aren't afraid of heights, as the vineyard stretches across a series of hillocks backed by a ridge line with some truly dizzying escarpments. For example, on the southern slope of the hill where I am, they're working on inclines of up to 50%!
Food and wine pairing: Fleurie wine to accompany a leg of lamb
The Fleurie AOC is exclusively red , like all Beaujolais crus. It's refined and elegant, like its hillsides. Ideal with Easter leg of lamb. It's my favorite wine for aperitifs with friends.
AOC Fleurie: the most feminine of the Beaujolais wines!
Fancy trying Fleurie wine? Then pay a visit to the Cave de Fleurie. It's the first cooperative winery in Beaujolais , established in 1927 by the women of the village. It just goes to show that Fleurie is rightly considered the most feminine of the Beaujolais wines!
