Carcassonne-Montpellier: the Tour de France from a wine perspective
After some beautiful stages in the Pyrenees , the riders will set off from the Cité de Carcassonne towards Montpellier . Hosting the Tour de France for the 32nd time, the capital of the Hérault department has become an essential stopover between the Pyrenees and the Alps . A perfect opportunity to escape to the Languedoc vineyards!
A journey through the heart of the Languedoc vineyards
Competing with the Tour de France cyclists, we set off into the Languedoc vineyards, which stretch from west to east, from Carcassonne to Nîmes. Following the Mediterranean coast to the south and the Cévennes mountains to the north, we enjoy the great diversity of landscapes the vineyards offer. This diversity is reflected in the vines themselves, particularly in the very different soil compositions and cultivation methods. Nevertheless, the grape bunches share a common hot and dry climate, typical of Languedoc.
Like the many tourists who flock to the region each year, various grape varieties have adapted perfectly to these growing conditions. The ranking for this Languedoc stage includes:
The team of red wines whose production is predominant in the region with for example the grape varieties grenache noir, syrah, carignan, mourvèdre, cinsault, or even cabernet-sauvignon.
The rosé wine team shares similar grape varieties with the red wines, for example the use of Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah.
The team of white wines whose reputation is well established in the region includes, for example, the grape varieties Grenache Gris and Blanc, Macabeu, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Vermentino, Muscat à Petits Grains, Muscat d'Alexandrie, Marsanne, Roussanne, Piquepoul, Chardonnay, Mauzac, Chenin, or Ugni Blanc.
The sparkling wine team has some lovely surprises in store, for example, the Mauzac, Chardonnay, or Chenin grape varieties.
A tour of the main appellations of Languedoc
While the 22 teams of the Tour de France will share a route of more than 160 kilometers between Carcassonne and Montpellier, the Languedoc vineyard offers 20 appellations spread over more than 245,000 hectares.
A quick look at the map:
To the west and south of the vineyard , one finds the Corbières region , which produces a powerful and full-bodied red, a velvety and aromatic rosé, and a rich and smooth white. Within this appellation, one also finds Fitou , which offers tannic red wines , and the sparkling wines of Limoux , which offer persistent aromatic notes on both the nose and palate.
Further west and north , you'll find Cabardès , which produces both red and rosé wines, distinguished by their strawberry notes. Among the region's emblematic wines, Minervois is also highly regarded, offering a powerful and structured red , a robust rosé with fresh notes, and crisp whites with hints of vanilla and honey.
In the center , we find in particular Picpoul-de-Pinet, a dry, fresh and fruity white wine, as well as Saint-Chinian which mainly offers reds , but also some rosés and fresh whites .
From the center to the east , we find in particular the wines of Pic-Saint-Loup , or the wines of Clape.
Gourmet stops in Languedoc
While the region boasts a wide selection of wines, Languedoc offers numerous specialties to complement its wines . These are just some of the opportunities to appreciate the unique character of Languedoc wines!
Choose a winning team:
The team of powerful red wines pairs wonderfully with a gardianne de taureau or a cassoulet from Castelnaudary.
The team of typical white wines from the region is perfect with fish or shellfish, for example to accompany the delicious oysters from Bouzigues, the excellent brandade from Nîmes or a succulent Mediterranean sea bass.
The rosé wine team is ideal for long summer days, around barbecues , shellfish dishes, tapas, Sète-style tielles, or simply with a salad in the colours of summer fruits and vegetables.
The sparkling wine team is excellent for an aperitif or to accompany dessert.
To conclude this gourmet stage, we end with a special mention for the typical Muscat wines of the region which perfectly complement chocolate desserts .
Commentary on the stage : Offering a great diversity of landscapes, cellars and wines, the Languedoc vineyard offers us beautiful getaways… for taste, food and wine tourism.
