Laetitia Allemand takes us to experience the excitement of the grape harvest in Beaujolais at Domaine Chasselay. A closer look at this crucial part of the grape harvest in a warm and friendly atmosphere!
The grape harvest in Beaujolais
Did you know that throughout Beaujolais, only one grape variety is cultivated for red and rosé wines ? It's Gamay. And Chardonnay for white wines .
In fact, more than half of the world's Gamay vineyards are located here in Beaujolais! It's a fragile and delicate grape variety that must be harvested in whole bunches. This is the foundation of Beaujolais winemaking. That's why it's mostly harvested by hand, especially since we're in the steepest vineyard in France! No fewer than 50,000 pickers and porters are hard at work. Their movements are precise. First, the leaves are removed, then the bunches are picked, and the best grapes are sorted.
Beaujolais wines
This expertise doesn't, however, impact the price of Beaujolais wines, which are among the most affordable. While they produce accessible red wines and the famous Beaujolais Nouveau , the winemakers of the Beaujolais AOC also know how to delight us with aromatic rosés and some delicate whites!
Let's not deny ourselves the pleasure; we love Beaujolais red with a good charcuterie platter, but also with sushi . White Beaujolais with salmon or seafood is excellent!
