Discovering the Juliénas AOC
Updated on December 14, 2022
After Côte-de-Brouilly and Chiroubles, Laetitia Allemand takes us along to discover the Juliénas AOC. Covering the south and southwest slopes of Mont de Bessay, the Juliénas vineyard is located in the far north of the Rhône department, bordering Saône-et-Loire and the Mâconnais wine region. Named after Julius Caesar and an AOC since 1938, it is considered one of the oldest vineyards in Beaujolais and has been developing since the Gallo-Roman period. Well-structured and rich in color, Juliénas wines pair perfectly with a good ribeye or steak. All aboard for Beaujolais!
The village of Juliénas
Here we are in the village center of Juliénas , located south of the appellation of the same name. The town is said to owe its name to Julius Caesar himself. Quite something!
I am standing in front of the old church which, as you can see, was converted into a wine cellar in 1954. Victor Peyret, a winegrower and wine merchant, was the driving force behind this project. At that time, he also did a great deal to promote the wines of Juliénas by introducing them to Paris, particularly to journalists from the satirical newspaper Le Canard Enchaîné.
The Juliénas AOC vineyard
But Juliénas owes its reputation above all to the qualities of its wine, whose grapes benefit from the sunny slopes of Mont de Bessay, in the far north of Beaujolais.
The vines are therefore cultivated on hillsides between 230 and 430 meters in altitude, on predominantly poor and stony soils that produce low yields. The resulting grapes are rich and concentrated, producing structured and harmonious red wines that can be aged for up to 10 years.
