Discovering the Chiroubles AOC
After Brouilly and Côte-de-Brouilly, Laetitia Allemand takes us along to discover the Chiroubles AOC. Recognized by the INAO as an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) since the decree of September 11, 1936, Chiroubles is produced in the Rhône department, in the commune of Chiroubles, at an altitude of 250 to 450 meters. It is the highest cru of Beaujolais. All aboard, off to Beaujolais !
The village of Chiroubles
We are in the village of Chiroubles, in the heart of the appellation of the same name. The statue here is of Victor Pulliat. He is a very important figure for Beaujolais, as he is the one who saved the vineyards from phylloxera.
The Chiroubles AOC vineyard, Beaujolais wine
You may not have noticed, but we're in the highest vineyards of Beaujolais . We're averaging 400 meters above sea level. The vines thrive here in this magnificent natural amphitheater, despite the cooler climate. They can benefit from their excellent sun exposure for longer than other Beaujolais vineyards because the harvest here is later.
The wines of Chiroubles
Thanks to its exceptional 100% granite terroir, Chiroubles is a highly aromatic wine distinguished by its vivacity, roundness, and finesse . The winemakers here like to say that this is where the quintessence of Gamay is expressed, which, let's remember, is the sole grape variety used in the red and rosé wines of Beaujolais.
Tasting tips for Chiroubles AOC
With its light tannins, the Chiroubles AOC is a very pleasant red wine to drink after work, for example, with fine charcuterie or light appetizers such as verrines. I also recommend it with grilled fish.
