All About the Southwest Region

The Southwest is a vast wine region situated between Occitanie and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Although long overshadowed by Bordeaux, it distinguishes itself through a wide diversity of terroirs, climates, and grape varieties. It produces red, white, and rosé wines, as well as sweet and sparkling wines, often recognized for their excellent value for money and their versatility at the table.

An Ancient Wine Region

Viticulture has been established in the Southwest since Roman times, long before the development of the Bordeaux vineyard. During the Middle Ages, the region was known as the Haut-Pays. Wines were transported via the Garonne and Dordogne rivers for export, often earlier than those from Bordeaux, which led to the implementation of the 'wine police' to restrict their commercialization.

Today, the Southwest is experiencing renewed interest, driven by the valorization of its local grape varieties and a more quality-oriented approach to viticulture.

An Extensive and Diverse Vineyard

The Southwest vineyard spans 13 departments, from Aveyron to the Basque Country. It is the 4th largest French wine region.
The soils are highly varied: molasse, alluvial soils, limestone plateaus, 'sables fauves' (tawny sands), Pyrenean flysch. This geological diversity promotes very different wine styles depending on the areas.

Climates also vary:

  • continental in the northeast

  • temperate oceanic climate to the west

  • Mediterranean climate to the south

A region structured into multiple sub-regions

The Southwest is typically segmented into two primary areas:

The Upland Region

Situated in the vicinity of the Garonne, Dordogne, Lot, and Tarn valleys, it encompasses, among others:

  • Bergerac and its numerous appellations (Bergerac, Côtes de Bergerac, Monbazillac, Montravel…)

  • Cahors, Gaillac, Marcillac, Côtes de Millau

  • Côtes du Marmandais, Coteaux du Quercy

The Pyrenean Foothills

This area comprises the vineyards located further to the south:

  • Jurançon and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh

  • Saint-Mont, Tursan, Béarn, Irouléguy

  • Côtes de Gascogne, notably including Floc de Gascogne

These regions yield red, white, and rosé wines, in addition to sweet and sparkling varieties.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

The Southwest stands as one of France's most abundant regions for autochthonous grape varieties.
Key examples include:

  • Malbec, Tannat, Fer Servadou, Négrette for reds

  • Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Colombard, Sémillon, Loin-de-l’Œil for whites

Red wines frequently exhibit a structured profile, while white wines range from dry to moelleux, and rosés are cultivated across the majority of appellations.

Southwest Food and Wine Pairings

Southwest red wines pair effectively with robust meats such as Aubrac beef or duck magret.
Dry white wines complement mushrooms, Bayonne ham, or fish.
Sweet and moelleux wines harmonize with cheeses or certain sweet and savory dishes.
Rosés are well-suited for simple, summery cuisine.

Estates to Explore in the Southwest

This curated selection showcases estates emblematic of the Southwest vineyard's diversity and revitalization:

These estates offer the opportunity to discover South-West wines, ranging from approachable cuvées to more assertive expressions, always intrinsically linked to their original terroir.
